Rupert Charlesworth

rupert-charlesworthRupert Charlesworth read Music at King’s College London and continued his studies with Philip Doghan and Iain Ledingham at the Royal Academy of Music where he was generously supported by the Karaviotis Scholarship, the John Kenneth Adams Scholarship, the Josephine Baker Trust, the Countess of Munster Trust and Mr and Mrs Sommerville. He was a 2011 Academy Laureate of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. In 2013 he won the 1st prize (Regina Etz prive) and the audience prize (Michael Normington prize). Rupert’s career has taken him throughout Europe performing on such prestigious operatic stages as La Fenice, Venice and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Opera North. His roles include Damon Acis and Galatea for the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Angel 3/John (cover) in George Benjamin’s Written on Skin (Aix and ROH, London), Soldier Der Kaiser von Atlantis for English Touring Opera and Lysander (cover)Midsummer Night’s Dream for Opera North. Roles he sung whilst at the Royal Academy of Music include Tamino Die Zäuberflöte, Mr Rushworth in Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park and Count EnricoLa Vera Costanza under Trevor Pinnock.

Rupert is also in demand as oratorio soloist regularly performing works including the Bach St Matthew and St John Passions, Handel Messiah, Israel in Egypt, Monteverdi Vespers della Beata Virgine and Finzi Dies Natalis. His plans include a Messiah with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra / Nicholas Kraemer and returning to the Festival d’Aix en Provence in 2015 to sing Lysander inMidsummer Night’s Dream.
